What Does Accreditation Mean? – A Brief Summary

The college selection process is not an easy one; there are a great deal of things to consider when deciding which college is best for you. While you may focus on a school’s location or size, be sure to keep accreditation in mind. An accredited college is one that has chosen to be evaluated by an agency to receive accreditation, meaning its programs, faculty, curriculum, and philosophies meet the standards identified by government and professionals in education.

Accreditation is akin to a “stamp of approval.” For a college or university to receive accreditation, it must choose to undergo the process and then, once they earn the status, they must be periodically reevaluated to ensure they are maintaining the standards of accreditation. An accredited school is strongly recommended over unaccredited colleges, as you can be sure their programs and facilities are up to par and able to give you the best education possible.
