Religion at a Secular School
When you think of religious studies, you probably thinking of going to a Catholic place like Notre Dame or Evangelical school like Liberty. These are places that are controlled and operated by religious groups that strive to impose their values on a new generation to make sure they carry out God’s will throughout their lives. But did you know that you participate in religious studies and groups while at a big state school?
Religious studies aren’t nearly confined to just private schools as they are in high schools. The separation of church and state can only go so far. Big state schools offer religious programs because a lot of the religious beliefs are based on actual historic events. While the world isn’t only a few thousand years old and people in fact didn’t walk with dinosaurs, there really is some factual basis behind religion in its purest forms. Many of the saints were in fact historical figures who had some impact on history. You also can’t deny how much religion has impacted history in many ways from starting wars to at times controlling society. The impact has been huge, so it’s often taught as a form of historical study.
There are also a lot of religious groups at pretty much every campus you can imagine. In order to appeal to students, many different kinds of religious groups form campus ministries to help students find spirituality away from their church at home. Groups like the Catholic Student Association amongst many others unite students from across many campuses under the religious banner.
Whatever your religious background, there is usually some kind of activity to take part in while in college. They want to make sure every student is completely taken care of while they are away from home and this is just one more way to do it. More students will naturally be attracted to a place if everything they could ever want is available there, and religion is just another one of these amenities.
You don’t have to go to an overtly religious school to study religion. Nearly any place will accommodate you in some way. Don’t worry, you can worship no matter where you go.
