Studying Abroad

Every semester a small minority of the campus population disappears. Do they drop out of school? Do they just decide to commute from now on? Have you just not run into them? Well, it turns out they haven’t just left the school, they‘ve left the entire country, possibly even the continent. Studying abroad is a very popular activity among college students today. But why is this so and should you do it? Keep reading after the jump.

Traveling is one of the most popular activities known to man and probably always will. Even with the internet making the world an ever decreasingly smaller place, you still can’t really know what it’s like unless you go to a country for yourself. Young people always go backpacking in Europe while others always want to see what it’s like the mountains. While America is a startlingly big and diverse place, there are some things that just can’t be found outside their home country.

So why is it very popular among the college crowd, especially when everyone’s always talking about how busy they are in every aspect of life? Well, short answer: they’re lying. College students don’t have to work eight hour days or spend weeks with no spare time at all. Prior to college, you have to go to school for forty hours a week and after college you have to spend forty hours a week working. In college there are just classes that most people don’t even take seriously, so it’s really the perfect time to do it.

Studying abroad offers an opportunity you’re likely to never be able to have again. You can just go and live fancy free while taking classes in a foreign country. You can really soak up the culture and learn a language. You’ll be completely surrounded by everything within a foreign country to the point where it won’t really be foreign anymore.

Going to another country gives you learning opportunities you’ll probably never be able to have again. You’ll never have the time or maybe even the money to take a few months and live somewhere amongst your peers. There’s really nothing like it. Plus you get out of a semester of college at home. Win-win.
