Writing Your Scholarship Essays – A Brief Summary

Scholarship applications are – or should be – a big part of your college experience. Not only do they vary in award amounts, sometimes reaching the equivalent of a full semester’s tuition and fees, they do not need to be repaid. This makes them quite appealing to students, though scholarships do come with a few strings attached. Some require the student to carry a certain GPA or major in a specific field. Along with the lengthy application you’ll have to fill out, be prepared to also write an essay to accompany your information.

The essay is your chance to reveal a more personal side of yourself to the scholarship committee, and demonstrate in your own words why you are deserving of the award. But before you start writing, make sure you understand what is expected of you, as essay questions vary. Are there time or word limits? Who will read it? What do they want to know about you?
