The Most Difficult Majors

Think about the people you know who have gone off to college. Most of them aspired to change the world or cure cancer. Well next think about what they became after college. Most of the time it was something like an office worker or sandwich artist. There’s a very good reason for this. No, they didn’t just sit down one day and decide that cancer had beaten them. No, they probably didn’t just party until they had to take it easy. What they were trying to get into was probably much, much harder than a lot of other majors.

The dirty little secret of college is that most of the majors are fairly easy. For example, if you want to become a lawyer, you have to major in political science as an undergraduate student. What this means is that you have to take classes on George Washington and Thomas Jefferson aka things we learned in AP history. Most of these classes don’t go any deeper. You just take easy classes and then apply to law school. Pretty much all the liberal arts majors you’ve heard of like Philosophy and English are like this. It would even surprise you to know English doesn’t have more writing than other subjects. They’re basically all the same.

So what are the few that are harder? It turns out that they are all under one roof: science. These classes involved concepts that most of us simply couldn’t understand no want to. These students have to learn about RNA, DNA and everything in between. Some say they’re masochists but really they just want a good job and to change the world like many other students out there. They have to take classes that involved intense memorization and study for hours while also taking advanced math classes as well. Throw engineering students in as well, and you’ve put together all the students that have a tough time in college.

Students come to college wanting to change the world but soon realize that the classes needed for this job are simply too hard. Kids get beaten down to an infinite degree, with some even failing classes for the first time, and eventually give up and move on to something more manageable. This is probably what happened to everyone you know.
