Life After College
So you just graduated college? Really congratulations. Most families in certain parts of the country are just starting to graduate the first members of their families from college. You’ll be told how many doors that that little piece of paper will be able to open. Without it, you’d really be lost in life. You’d probably end up being a mailman or something. What’s that? You don’t know what to do with one? Well I’m here to tell you!
The first thing to know when you graduate college is that you have to network. You have to get to know many people involved in whatever field you desire to get into. Go to job fairs and apply for any job in the field you can. This way you’ll at least come into contact with these people. A clear majority of people in this country get their jobs simply by networking.
The next thing to know is to not get discouraged. Nearly everybody right out of college isn’t going to get their dream jobs. While some of us will be working for the Department of Defense or something like that, most people have to do things like wait tables or babysit to make ends meet. Nothing’s just as simple as wanting something and then getting it. You have to keep putting job applications out there and eventually they’ll break right and you’ll get the job you want. The problem is this may not happen for years. You may have to take a part time job or something similar just to pay the bills in the meantime.
You also may have to put your social life on hold. The college lifestyle is never going to happen again so just get over that to begin with. You’ll probably have to live with your parents and drunken frat parties will in fact not be readily available. It’ll revert back to high school for at least a little while. But once you get a job, the world will be at your feet. So just keep looking for your dream job and whether that happens or not, the faster you enter the real world, the faster you can move out of mom’s basement.
