Careers of a Liberal Arts Major

There are some majors in college that lead to specific careers. For example, if you’re an engineering major, you’re probably going to become an engineer. Nothing crazy there. If you major in molecular biology, chances are you’ll either be a molecular biologist or a doctor. As you can probably guess, it goes on much like this. But what happens when people major in subjects like English and Political Science? Where to do all these people go?

The key to majoring in one of the liberal arts subjects like English, Philosophy or whatever is flexibility. These majors are for people who really aren’t sure what they want to go into. There really are a huge number of different kinds of jobs available to students who major in these fields after college. While many PoliSci majors go to Law School, a majority don’t. They just end up in the same boat as all the other liberal arts majors. So why pick these majors?

Other than flexibility, the main reason people choose these majors is so they can take classes in something they like. They realize that these majors often won’t matter as long as they have their degree. It’s all about just getting that degree and then finding a way to get a job. They can essentially go into any field that doesn’t require a degree in a certain subject or a graduate degree. But wouldn’t it be harder to get a job with these degrees?

The answer is yes. While there are a great number of opportunities available to these majors, the main problem is just getting your foot in the door. For example, a finance company is going to hire a business major before an English major obviously. They probably want the person who has some semblance of experience in this field.

But when liberal arts majors do get the jobs they want, employers often prefer them. They can be trained exactly as the employers wish since they have experience. They can be an employer’s dream: someone who only does things the way you want.

Liberal arts majors can hurt at first, but once they get their feet in the door, watch out.
