Why You Should Join Greek Life

When you think of members of Greek life you probably only think of two things: getting drunk and hazing. They’re either peer pressuring students on your favorite sitcom or trying to make that character join their group while also taking a beating from a paddle. But are Greek students really like this? Of course not. Like with many aspects of college, the media has overblown certain aspects through pop culture. But what are these students really like?

First off, let’s just get this out of the way: Greek organizations are probably some of the best you can join during your college career. This is because they aren’t specialized in any way. They can take part in literally any activity on campus. Whether the school is holding homecoming bed races or a Dance Marathon, the Greek societies are probably going to be represented. In fact, it can get so overwhelming that non-Greek groups just will let them have it all. They’re involved in everything.

The second reason to join the Greek organizations is that you will never meet more people than through them. Obviously since they’re involved in so many different activities, you will come into contact with many people, especially members of other fraternities and sororities.

They also have mixers and other events that are specifically for meeting people. You can’t say this about any other organizations. They only have specific goals that often cut down what is available for the group to do. For example, Habitat for Humanity only builds houses. Are they going to play in a dodgeball tournament? Probably not. Will the fraternity that you join? Definitely. That pretty much embodies the difference right there. You’d have to join about ten different smaller clubs to make up what the average fraternity does. And that doesn’t even count the amount of people you will meet who just happen to be members of your specific group.

There really are a very large number of reasons for the average college student to become a part of Greek life, especially if you attend a rather large college. Meeting people can really be hard, and fraternities and sororities make it as easy as possible.
